Living word for 24-June-2024. Scripture says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”

*Todays scripture waa triggered by careful meditation about a prayer request pleading for God to be merciful to us, his creation. Mercy can be defined simply as the forgiveness the we dont or didnt deserve but God accords it to us.* One of the statements Jesus made on the sermon on the mount or what many of us call the beatitudes was, *”Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”* So mercy is a seed that you sow and the result is the whoever sows mercy shall also reap mercy. This means if you dont sow mercy then dont expect to reap mercy because the law is the you shall always reap what you sow.

For practical application of this mercy principle Jesus tells us the parable of the unmerciful servant. A man who owed his master ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him and since he wasnt able to pay his wife and children should be sold to pay the debt because this was the practice. He fell on his knees and pleads for more time to clear the debt and guess what the master took pity on him and cancelled his debt and let him go. After leaving he finds a fellow servant who owed him one hundred silver coins, grabs him and demands payment. He pleads with him but its on deaf ears, he gets him thrown into prison as a result. Other servants see this and go report to thier master.

*Matthew 18:32-35 teaches and says “Then the master called the servant in. ’You wicked servant,’ he said, ’I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’* I bet he couldnt answer that question, he was forgiven worth ten thousand bags of gold but couldnt forgive a fellow servant of one hundred silver coins!!! This is exactly like many of us, God has had mercy on us but we never extend this same mercy to others, how heartless.

*It adds and says, “In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed. “This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”* He is also finally thrown into prison till he pays back, just like he did to his fellow servant. We are then given a warning that this is how our heavenly Father will treat us if we dont forgive our brothers and sisters from our hearts. So if are not merciful we shouldnt expect mercy from God.

*Fellow child of God, are you a forgiving person? Are you a merciful person? Its incumbent on us as believers to be forgiving and also to be merciful because in so doing we are also sowing seeds for other people and God to be forgiving and merciful to us as well.*

Be blessed
